A*mei STAR Concert Tour 2007
Singapore Indoor Stadium
8th November 2007, 8 pm

A*mei dispelled all rumours surrounding her the moment she appeared on stage. Is A*mei afraid of large crowds? No way. She had performed to an audience of 80,000 just 5 days before in Shanghai. Are the rumours about her fledging vocal prowess true? No way. Her vocals were as full-throated as we remember them to be. Her first concert here in 5 years reacquainted her with the Singaporean fans garnered over her illustrious 11 year career, comprising songs recorded with the 3 record labels she has been with.

There is absolutely no one else who sings like A*mei in the Chinese pop music industry. In an industry inundated with cutesy female singers with limited performing talent, A-mei stands out with her husky vocals and stage presence. And if her voice alone was anything to go by, A*mei was and still is the reigning Queen of Mandopop, despite stiff competition from younger artists like Stefanie Sun and Jolin Tsai.

The show was a 3-hour, 40-song affair, covering most of the hits amassed over 11 years, showcasing A*mei’s amazing versatility as she performed up-tempo rock numbers and the ballads she is best known for. While many of the songs were not done in full but were instead parts of medleys, A*mei’s fans were apparently delighted as she sang songs that she has not done in years, such as Blue Skies as well as songs that she has never done before live, such as I Don’t Mind, the theme song from a Channel 8 drama serial back in the year 1998, which has the 10,000 strong audience singing along with her.

There were various segments within the show, such as the ballad segment which included a reworked version of her 1996 hit So You Want Nothing At All and the disco-pop segment with Victoria’s Secrets, a song from her latest album. However the highlight of the evening was most definitely the acoustic set, which had A*mei on acoustic guitar and dressed in just jeans and her tour T-shirt as she belted out her self-written song Only Love and others such as Release and Holding Hands which had the entire stadium to its feet and singing along.

The concert was a glitzy affair comprising 9 costume changes. However, it was A*mei’s personality that shone through the entire evening, and she had the audience eating right out of her hands. “I hope you don’t mind me talking so much,” she said in Mandarin, “but I love talking with you all.” A*mei’s warm demeanour mesmerized her fans, and even won her a marriage proposal from a male fan in the middle of the show!

A*mei, despite her superstar status, isn’t one to forget her roots or be complacent. This was apparent as she sang in her Taiwanese aboriginal tongue as the introduction for her solo debut single Sisters. Also, she let her band members and background vocalists take centre stage during the band introduction as they each sang a small excerpt of Sisters. A*mei paid tribute to her late mentor, Chang Yu-sheng with a solo version of their duet The One I Love Most Hurts Me The Most, as well as an emotional cover of Chang’s song Missing You Everyday, which A*mei sang acapella.

A*mei left a strong impression on her audience to last another 5 years, and she certainly satisfied her fans who had waited such a long time for her first concert tour in half a decade. And judging from this mega performance from the Taiwanese megastar, it would be worth waiting another 5 years for her next concert tour.
